When my father came up with the idea to start his own Italian Film Festival 12 years ago, we could not have imagined that it would grow into such a colourful and highly anticipated national event, screening over 6 weeks at 13 Palace Cinemas in Australia, to an enthusiastic audience of Italo- Australians, italophiles and film buffs.

This year, I'm excited to reveal the line-up of 31 new Italian films including 29 features and 2 documentaries, plus 3 cult classics and a short film! Audiences will have many opportunities to experience the very best Italian cinema at over 900 screenings nationwide beckoning the question: is this the biggest Italian Film Festival in the world, outside Italy?

This is truly our most dynamic programme yet and I look forward to watching the films again with you, hearing your responses and reading your instant feedback on twitter.com/italianff.

My favourites include the laugh-out-loud Opening Night film Welcome to the South (Benvenuti al sud) an hilarious take on the universal theme of rivalry between one part of a country and another, in Italy's case, the north versus the south; Closing Night selection John Turturro's magical Neapolitan adventure Passione; gritty and compelling directorial debut Corpo Celeste picked up from Directors' Fortnight in Cannes which highlights Alice Rohwacher (Alba's younger sister) as a director to watch; and a film close to my heart from the land of my heritage Basilicata Coast to Coast, which will be preceded by a filmed introduction by Francis Ford Coppola revealing the spectacular region of Basilicata (also known as Lucania) as Italy's best-kept-secret.

You don't need to be Italian, or even speak Italian, to love Italian movies and enjoy the Italian experience that we create at our cinemas. This would not be possible without our patrons and sponsors, thank you for your ongoing support. I look forward to seeing you in the cinemas at the Palace bars, Lavazza Mocha Martinis in hand!

Buon divertimento,

Elysia Zeccola Hill - Director
