GUCI or the Griffith University Circolo Italiano (otherwise known as The Griffith University Italian Club) was established by the students for the students. Despite the club being relatively small and primarily known those students who undertake Italian as a part of their degree and their teachers, interest in the group has increased slowly through years since first being established. To quote the famous words, GUCI has a dream. It is hoped that the club’s momentum will continue and that we will one day be a widely known social organization with members from all throughout the city of Brisbane.

The aim of GUCI is to encourage active interest in Italian and Italo-Australian society and culture. The club aims to achieve this by providing opportunites for members (and their friends) to experience and share this culture with other members, as well as the wider Italian community of Brisbane. The Italian language is taught at a multitude of places by our talented group of teaching staff: GU Nathan, GU Gold Coast and GU South Bank (in a diploma course), as well as at University of Queensland – St Lucia campus. As such, the club aims to create and promote a link between Griffith University, the University of Queensland, the Brisbane and Gold Coast branches of the Dante Alighieri Society (with whom GUCI is somewhat affiliated) and the wider Italian community of Brisbane.

The committee consists of a president, a vice-president, a secretary, a treasurer, an events manager, a first year representative, a second year representative and a University of Queensland representative. Due the fact that students come and go, with graduations and what not, the committee seems to change annually. This allows for new fresh faces to leave their mark on the club.

GUCI is open to all students and staff from the two universities, as well as their family members and friends. Members of the wider Italian community and the general public are also welcome to join! The events that GUCI holds are open to all who wish to come along and participate in Italian language and culture. So whether you have a passion for Italian fashion, an appetite for Italian food, a need for Italian mechanical speed, a vision for Italian theatre and films, a love for the true football, or a thirst to learn about Italian culture and language – please know that you are most welcome! We each have something to bring as individuals. If you are interested in creating our very own Little Italy in Brisbane, feel free to email us. The committee looks forward to hearing from you!!
